At the Heart of Tampa’s Medical Hub

Hi, my name is Dr. Effie Politis with Politis Plastic Surgery. So just being in this Tampa, you know, I loved it because Moffitt was such a great place to do our oncological training. Tampa General, we got to run the burn unit, take care of the really sick patients. And also, we were exposed to a lot of trauma. And then the VA, actually the VA in Tampa is the busiest VA in the nation. So lots of different opportunities to take care of like elderly problems or different problems or infections, wounds, fractures. Yes, very difficult, neglected cases that you typically don’t see in just a regular community setting. Our faculty actually came from University of Michigan, so they were extremely good faculty. We also self-recruited. We actually have quite a large residency program now. It has about 18 to 21 residents per year. We have a burn fellowship. We were able to do research while in residency. We were expected to produce several research papers. So it was a very strong ACGME accredited program that really exposed us to all the fields that we needed to. If you felt in particular that you wanted more experience in pediatric plastic surgery or some of the fields that certainly require a little more expertise, then you would do a fellowship. But overall, I think comprehensive plastic surgery, we got a very strong foundation and training.
