Swimming after surgery is a huge question in our practice especially living in Florida. Everybody has a pool and we all want to get in it especially in the summer. Well it’s all summer here and so it does depend on the procedure that you have done. If you have a prosthetic device in you we’re usually going to be a little bit more conservative about when you can get in the pool versus someone that’s just having a skin procedure done. Typically you can expect four to six weeks that you’re not going to be able to submerge in a pool, ocean, bathtub but we always have the caveat your incisions must be completely healed. So if you don’t heal as quick as someone else does then you’re not getting in the water for a longer period of time. Skin is a great barrier against bacteria and microorganisms but it has to be intact to work so if you have an open incision it’s not doing its job
