Do you have loose, sagging skin in your buttocks? Are you uncomfortable with the excess fat? Have you just had dramatic weight loss and feel self-conscious about your gluteal area?
Well, you don’t have to let this situation hurt your self-confidence and frustrate your efforts to achieve a slimmer, more sculpted body. You can get a butt lift and have smoother, more youthful buttocks!
What is a butt lift?
A buttock lift is a procedure to remove excess fat and skin through surgical excision and liposuction. It helps with loose, sagging skin, extra fat from aging, or mobility problems. It also alleviates discomfort due to the excess skin, makes the buttock area smoother and more toned, and gives long-lasting results.
A butt lift surgery can help you to:
- (a) Remove the loose skin and cellulite below your waistline after pregnancy
- (b) Eliminate skin laxity and sagginess (ptosis) of your buttocks
- (c) Make your butts proportionate to the rest of your body, particularly after significant weight loss or bariatric surgery
- (d) Make your buttock area smoother and more toned
What are your options for butt lift surgery?
Your butt lift options depend on your body shape, skin quality, and the quantity of excess skin you want to remove.
Your plastic surgeon may recommend a lower body lift if a large amount of skin needs to be removed. This option will remove excess skin around your stomach, buttock, hips, and thighs. But if eliminating excess skin may cause a loss in volume of your buttock, your plastic surgeon may recommend a buttock augmentation in addition to a buttock lift.
At Politis Plastic Surgery, we encourage that you schedule a consultation session well in advance to help you establish your options. During the consultation, Dr. Effie Politis will assess your overall health and expectations and determine whether the procedure is right for you. She will also answer your questions, address your concerns, and develop a tailored surgery plan for you.
How should you prepare for the procedure?
Once your buttock lift procedure is planned, you will be given pre-operative instructions to prepare for it.
For example, you will be required to stop smoking at least six weeks before your procedure. Smoking slows down healing and increases the risk of postoperative complications. You will also be asked to stop taking certain anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin, and herbal medicines that increase the risk of bleeding.
A healthy diet rich in protein will promote healing and keep your body well hydrated. Plus, the procedure is conducted in an outpatient setting, so you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night after your procedure.
While a butt lift does not have significant risks, there is potential for complications. For instance, there may be an adverse reaction to anesthesia, infection, bleeding, and changes in sensation, and scarring, allergic reactions, hematoma, and seroma, damage to underlying structures, or unsatisfactory results that may necessitate additional procedures. You will need to follow your plastic surgeon’s advice and instructions before and after the procedure to minimize these risks.
How is the butt lift performed?
Your butt lift procedure will take at least 3 hours to complete. It will be done according to your surgical plan, with the most effective techniques used to ensure the best result. Just before the procedure, a sedative or general anesthesia will be administered to keep you asleep and comfortable throughout the surgery. A breathing tube will be placed in your mouth to keep your airway secure during the procedure’s position changes.
The plastic surgeon will make an incision at the top of your buttocks, in the groin, hips, or under your buttocks’ cheeks. Through the incision, the surgeon will remove excess skin and then tighten the remaining skin. For a balanced, smoother appearance, liposuction may be used to boost the contours of your buttocks or thighs.
The incisions are sutured and closed in layers to keep the skin tight. Your surgeon will then place drains and dressings, and you will be required to wear a compression garment or girdle to stretch the skin, tighten suspended tissues, and reduce swelling.
Recovering after a butt lift procedure
Immediately after the surgery, you will be moved into the recovery area and monitored closely. You will only leave for home when you are comfortable and with another adult to drive you home and stay with you for at least one day.
While you may experience some pain after the anesthesia wears off, your plastic surgeon will prescribe pain-relieving medication. But should the pain be extreme or long-lasting after you are discharged, contact your surgeon. Together with the pain, you may have some swelling and redness, which may remain for weeks or months. Speak with your physician to determine whether the pain, redness, and swelling are normal or a sign of a problem.
Your surgeon will instruct you on how to sit and sleep, including the use of pillows. Make sure to adhere to the instructions to minimize tension on your incisions, reduce pain, and facilitate a thinner scar. You may also need a lot of help at home for at least two weeks, as you should avoid doing anything strenuous. Find a friend or relative to help you cook, clean, and tend to small children for two weeks.
If you have drains, they should remain in place for two to three weeks or longer. The drains help to remove fluid that accumulates within the incisions and to control swelling. Your plastic surgeon will ask you to measure the amount of fluid in the drains daily. Once the fluid output falls to a critically low level, the drains will be removed in your doctor’s office.
Since a buttock lift is an extensive procedure, expect two to three weeks to recover before resuming normal activities. A healthy diet, not smoking, and having someone to help you will speed up your healing and prevent complications. Nevertheless, full recovery may take several months.
Lasting, impressive results
A butt lift will eliminate skin laxity and sagginess, make your buttocks smoother and more toned, and ensure your butts are proportionate to the rest of your body.
The results are pretty impressive and long-lasting. And if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid stretching the skin through gaining weight, you will enjoy a youthful contour for a long time.
To ensure a safe, healthy, and beautiful outcome, work closely with your plastic surgeon. Be sure to attend all your scheduled follow-up sessions, and speak with your doctor every time you notice changes.
The results of your butt lift may be affected by weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging, so stay in touch with your doctor to have your questions or concerns addressed.
